NAFDAC Seizes Petrol Tankers Used for Edible Oil Smuggling [Video]
NAFDAC Cracks Down on Edible Oil Smuggling in Lagos, Seizes Three Petrol Tankers.
In a surprise operation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) impounded three petrol tanker trucks in Apapa, Lagos, on July 23, 2024, for allegedly transporting crude edible vegetable oil.
Acting on a tip-off, NAFDAC officials intercepted the tankers, which had reportedly been used to transport petrol, and escorted them to a processing facility in Sango-Ota. The agency expressed concerns about potential chemical contamination and health risks associated with the transportation of edible oil in petrol tankers.
The seized crude soy oil was handed over to NAFDAC’s Southwest Zonal Office for further investigation and regulatory action. A representative of the edible oil company claimed ownership of the trucks and their contents.
In response to the incident, NAFDAC’s Director-General has established a committee to develop guidelines and a code of ethics for the marketing and distribution of edible vegetable oils in Nigeria.
The agency is urging the public to report any suspicious or unwholesome practices in the edible oil industry.
