Abuja Court Slams Four Internet Fraudsters with Jail Terms.
In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction and sentencing of four internet fraudsters in Abuja on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
The convicts – Abdulrashid Umar, Ekemini Godwin, Anozie Emmanuel, and Freedom John – were found guilty of obtaining by false pretence and sentenced to various prison terms by Justice M. Adamu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama.
According to the charges, Godwin and Emmanuel impersonated individuals on Facebook, scamming victims out of $520 and $300 respectively. The duo, along with Umar and John, pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to their conviction and sentencing.
Justice Adamu handed down prison terms ranging from one to two years, with fines totaling N2.1 million. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the phones used in the commission of the crimes to the Federal Government.
The EFCC’s successful prosecution marks a significant milestone in the fight against internet fraud, with the agency vowing to continue its relentless pursuit of cybercriminals.
The convictions are a testament to the EFCC’s unwavering commitment to tackling the scourge of internet fraud and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The agency’s Abuja Zonal Directorate has been at the forefront of the fight against cybercrime, securing numerous convictions and recovering millions of naira in fines and forfeitures.
With the latest convictions, the EFCC has sent a strong message to internet fraudsters that they will not go unpunished.
The agency is urging Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
As the EFCC continues to crack down on internet fraud, it is clear that the days of impunity for cybercriminals are numbered.
