EFCC Launches Probe into Vessel Caught with Stolen Oil in Port Harcourt.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun investigating a vessel, “Bravo Alero”, suspected of being involved in oil theft in the Niger Delta region. The vessel, which was intercepted by the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS FORMOSSO, was found to be carrying 200 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The Navy handed over the vessel to the EFCC for further investigation and potential prosecution. Commander M.A Gaga, representing the Commanding Officer of the Forward Operating Base, FOB, FORMOSO, expressed confidence in the EFCC’s ability to investigate and prosecute the case.
The EFCC’s Chief Superintendent, CSE Shittu Babatunde, assured the Navy of a prompt and professional investigation, pledging to work closely with the Navy to combat illegal oil bunkering in the region.
This development marks the latest effort by the EFCC to crack down on oil theft and illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta, as part of its broader mission to combat economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
This investigation is a significant step in the fight against oil theft and illegal bunkering, which has been a persistent problem in the Niger Delta region. The EFCC’s probe will aim to unravel the network of individuals and organizations involved in the illegal activity and bring them to justice.
The vessel, “Bravo Alero”, is currently in the custody of the EFCC, and officials say they will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the source of the stolen oil and the intended destination. The agency will also work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the theft.
The EFCC’s efforts to combat oil theft and illegal bunkering have been ongoing, with several arrests and prosecutions made in recent years. However, the agency faces significant challenges in tackling the problem, including corruption, lack of resources, and the complexity of the illegal networks involved.
Despite these challenges, the EFCC remains committed to fighting economic and financial crimes, including oil theft and illegal bunkering. The agency’s investigation into the “Bravo Alero” vessel is a testament to its dedication to holding those responsible for these crimes accountable and protecting Nigeria’s natural resources.
As the investigation continues, officials say they will provide updates on any developments and arrests made. The EFCC is urging anyone with information about oil theft or illegal bunkering to come forward and assist in the investigation.
