Kano LG Polls: 20 Aspirants Test Positive for Drugs, Including Cannabis and Codeine

Kano LG Polls: 20 Aspirants Fail Drug Test, NDLEA Reveals.

In a shocking revelation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State has disclosed that at least 20 aspirants vying for elective offices in the forthcoming local government elections have tested positive for multiple drugs.

According to Abubakar Idris Ahmad, commander of the NDLEA in Kano State, the affected aspirants, all from the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), tested positive for opioid (codeine), THC (Tetrahydro cannabis), benzodiazenpines, and nicotine.

Speaking to Daily Trust on Tuesday, Ahmad revealed that the drug screening exercise is ongoing, with more aspirants expected to undergo testing. Notably, no female aspirant has tested positive so far.

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has set October 26 for the local government elections, which will fill 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions. The NDLEA’s findings have raised concerns about the suitability of these aspirants for public office.

The electoral commission will now face pressure to decide on the eligibility of these aspirants, particularly those who tested positive for nicotine, which is found in tobacco products.
