Court Slams Jail Term on Man for Internet Fraud in Abuja
Abuja Court Slams One-Year Jail Term on Internet Fraudster.
In a significant victory for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), an Abuja court has convicted and sentenced Nelson Solomon to one year in prison for internet fraud.
Solomon, who was prosecuted by the EFCC’s Abuja Zonal Directorate, faced a two-count charge of impersonation, cheating, and obtaining by false pretence. He was found guilty of pretending to be an American engineer and an American citizen to defraud his victims of $200.
The presiding judge, Justice I. Nwosu of the FCT High Court Maitama, Abuja, handed down the sentence on September 9, 2024, after Solomon pleaded guilty to the charges. In addition to the jail term, Solomon was also ordered to pay a fine of N50,000 or forfeit his iPhone to the federal government.
The conviction and sentencing of Solomon serve as a warning to others engaged in internet fraud, as the EFCC continues its crackdown on cybercrime in Nigeria.
