Man Sets Family Home, Car Ablaze, Alleging Witchcraft by Father and Stepmother

Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe – In a shocking turn of events, a family dispute turned violent, resulting in a devastating arson attack that left a trail of destruction and a 21-year-old man behind bars.
VERDICT HANDED DOWN
The Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court recently sentenced Knowledge Jani to 4 years in prison, with one year suspended, for malicious property damage. Jani’s rampage occurred on April 22, 2024, at his father’s Shackleton Mine residence.
WITCHCRAFT ALLEGATIONS FUEL VIOLENCE
According to court records, Jani accused his father and stepmother of practicing witchcraft, claiming it caused his illness. In a fit of rage, he vandalized his father’s Nissan Sunny, shattering windows and damaging the exterior. Jani then siphoned fuel from the vehicle, using it to set the house and car ablaze.
DESTRUCTION AND ARREST
The fire caused extensive damage, with losses estimated at USD 14,000. Emergency responders contained the flames, but not before significant destruction occurred. Jani was arrested at the scene following a distress call from his father.
JUSTICE SERVED
The court’s ruling brought closure to the affected family and community. Jani will serve an effective 3 years in prison, with the suspended sentence contingent on good behavior.
