Abia Auto Crash Claims 5 Lives, 2 Babies Among Victims
Tragedy Strikes on Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway: 5 Lives Lost in Sienna Crash.
A devastating road accident occurred on Sunday at approximately 12:45 pm near Umuika Junction, claiming the lives of five passengers, including two infants. The Abia Line Network Sienna vehicle was traveling from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to Aba, Abia State, when the driver, who survived the crash, lost control of the vehicle after falling asleep at the wheel.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver was speeding when he crashed into a truck and veered into the bush. Despite the severity of the accident, the driver survived, while all passengers perished. The Abia State Police Command and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have confirmed the incident, with the latter clarifying that five people died, not eleven as initially reported.
The FRSC attributed the crash to driver fatigue, with further investigations ongoing to determine the exact cause. The rescue team responded promptly, transporting the injured to Ronald Hospital and the deceased to Mighty Moon Mortuary. A follow-up on Monday revealed that another male adult succumbed to his injuries, bringing the total fatalities to five.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the transport company were unsuccessful, as the General Manager was unavailable for comment. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driver fatigue and the importance of road safety measures.
