Lagos Inferno: 7-Storey Building Engulfed in Flames
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that a recent fire outbreak at a 7-storey building on Sanni Adewale Street, Lagos Island, resulted in no loss of life. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, with the fire service receiving a distress call at 5:17 am and responding promptly with teams from Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations.
According to a statement by Director Margaret Adeseye, firefighters arrived at the scene by 5:33 am and swiftly brought the situation under control. Ventilation efforts are ongoing to ensure safety in the area. Preliminary investigations suggest an electrical surge triggered the fire.
This incident comes after a disturbing trend of fire-related fatalities in the region, with 50 lives lost due to fire incidents between January and June 2024. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to 1,085 fire rescue requests during this period, rescuing 223 casualties. Notable incidents include a fire at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in the Lekki Free Zone on June 26, 2024.
The agency’s data reveals a breakdown of fire-related fatalities: eight in January, four in February, five in March, eight in April, 23 in May, and two in June. Additionally, at least 10 building collapses occurred in the state during the first half of 2024.
