Niger State Government Declares War on Illegal Mining: Operators Warned to Desist

Niger State’s Illegal Mining Epidemic: A Deadly Trade.

A recent tragedy in Niger State, where dozens of miners lost their lives in a collapsed pit, has highlighted the dangers of illegal mining in the region. Despite efforts by successive administrations to curb the practice, illegal mining remains a lucrative source of income for many, with devastating consequences for the environment and human health.

The state’s Governor, Muhammed Umar Bago, has vowed to take action against illegal miners, with the Ministry of Mineral Resources launching a crackdown on operators. Dozens have been arrested and charged, with many more expected to follow.

But the miners themselves remain defiant, insisting they have no other means of survival. “We can’t quit this business,” said one female miner. “We need to feed our families and this is the only way we can do it.”

Experts warn that the indiscriminate mining is not only destroying the soil but also putting lives at risk. “Those involved may be enjoying what they are doing, but they are destroying the topmost layer of the soil, polluting the environment, and putting lives at risk,” said Professor Baba Abubakar Lawal, an expert in soil science.

As the state government continues its crackdown, it remains to be seen whether the miners will be persuaded to abandon their deadly trade. One thing is certain, however: the consequences of inaction will be catastrophic.
