Break for Freedom: Abducted ASUU Zonal Coordinator Outwits Captors

Abducted ASUU Zonal Coordinator Escapes from Kidnappers.

In a dramatic turn of events, Prof. Monday Igbafe, the Benin Zonal coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has escaped from his kidnappers. Igbafe was abducted on Saturday night, September 28, 2024, while driving into his home at Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The kidnappers had taken Igbafe to an unknown destination in his Toyota Highlander with registration number ABJ 180 JQ. Initially, the whereabouts of the zonal coordinator remained unknown, with no contact from the abductors to his family or colleagues, according to Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, AAU ASUU Chairman.

However, in a surprising twist, Igbafe managed to break free from his captors. The Edo State Police Command confirmed the escape, attributing it to the pressure mounted by operatives from the Ekpoma Division.

“The command is aware of the report. Operatives of the Ekpoma Division mounted pressure on the kidnappers which led to the escape of the victim. We are on the trail of the suspects to ensure they are brought to book,” said SP Joel Yamu, Police Public Relations Officer.

The police are currently pursuing the suspects to ensure justice is served. This daring escape brings relief to Igbafe’s family, colleagues, and the academic community.
