– 1820: The British colonial authorities established the first police force in Nigeria, known as the “Consular Guard”.

– 1861: The British formed the “Hausa Constabulary” to maintain law and order in the northern regions.

– 1896: The “Southern Nigeria Police” and “Northern Nigeria Police” were established.

– 1914: The two forces merged to form the “Nigeria Police Force”.

– 1920s-1950s: The force underwent significant modernization and expansion.

– 1960: Nigeria gained independence, and the police force became a national institution.

– 1964: The Nigeria Police Force was formally established as a federal agency.

– 1970s-1980s: The force faced challenges during the civil war and subsequent military regimes.

– 1990s-present: The force has undergone reforms and modernization efforts, including the establishment of specialized units and training programs.

– 2019: The Police Act was repealed and replaced with the “Police Establishment Act”, aimed at modernizing the force.
