Edo Police Investigate Suspicious Death of Hotel Staff Member
Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday, July 29, 2024, when Fidelis Osaghae, an employee of Valchi Fast Food and Bar in Auchi, Edo State, met his untimely demise under questionable circumstances. The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death, which has left the deceased’s family and community seeking answers.
According to reports, Fidelis was summoned by his employer, Valentine Oyemike, in the early hours of the morning. His wife, Esther, recounted the events leading up to his death, stating that Fidelis had called her on a video call around 1:30 am, informing her that his boss had asked him to bring something back to work. He returned home briefly before leaving again, assuring his wife that he would be back soon. However, when Esther woke up at 5 am, Fidelis had not returned, and his phone was unreachable.
Esther’s concerns grew as she contacted the supervisor at the facility, who assured her that everything was under control. However, when Mr. Valentine later called her to come to the hospital, Esther’s fears were confirmed. Her sister, who went to the hospital on her behalf, found Fidelis’ body in Mr. Valentine’s car. The hospital reportedly rejected the corpse, stating that it was brought in dead. Esther and her sister observed strange marks and injuries on Fidelis’ body, suggesting possible torture and pain inflicted before his death.
The Akin Fadeyi Foundation has filed a petition on behalf of Esther, urging the Inspector-General of Police to investigate Fidelis’ death. The petition alleges that the local police division in Auchi has shown a lack of willingness to investigate the matter thoroughly and has already exonerated Mr. Valentine, reportedly an influential person in the area. The foundation claims that the police have failed to take necessary actions to address the suspicious homicide, raising concerns of police complicity and cover-up.
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is underway, with the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department. The Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Joel, stated that the case is being treated as murder, requiring a comprehensive investigation. The outcome will be made public as soon as it is concluded.
Valentine Oyemike declined to comment on the matter, stating that he had been invited by the police. The Inspector-General of Police has acknowledged receipt of the petition and is expected to order a swift and comprehensive investigation into the matter.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains in shock, seeking justice for Fidelis and his family. The circumstances surrounding his death demand a thorough investigation, and it is crucial that the authorities ensure that no stone is left unturned in uncovering the truth.
