Emir of Yauri’s Guard Killed in Hippopotamus Attack
Tragedy Strikes Kebbi State: Emir of Yauri’s Guard Killed by Hippopotamus.
A devastating incident occurred in Kebbi State on Sunday, September 22, 2024, when a mother hippopotamus attacked and killed Malam Usman Maigadi, a 60-year-old guard at the Emir of Yauri’s orchard. The incident took place in Yauri River at Tillo Village in Yauri Local Government Area, where Maigadi was fishing.
Speculations suggest that the hippopotamus, nursing a baby, may have perceived Maigadi as a threat to its young, leading to the fatal attack in self-defense. Local authorities, including Chairman Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu and the Kebbi State Government, have confirmed the incident.
Reaction from Authorities
Chairman Shu’aibu expressed that Maigadi has been laid to rest in Yauri, following Islamic rites and a funeral prayer. Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris extended condolences to the Yauri Emirate and the deceased’s family, praying for Allah’s forgiveness and blessings.
This tragic event highlights the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the importance of exercising caution when interacting with animals, especially those with young.
