Enugu State Mourns Two Deaths in Masquerade-Related Incidents [Video]

Tragedy Strikes in Enugu: Two Fatalities Reported Amidst Oriokpa Masquerade Attacks.

Nsukka, Enugu State – A devastating series of events unfolded in the University Town of Nsukka, claiming the lives of two innocent individuals. The victims fell prey to the notorious Oriokpa masqueraders, who have been wreaking havoc in the area.

First Incident: Woman Killed in Truck Collision

On Tuesday, September 2024, a woman met her untimely demise at Aku Road, Obechara area, Nsukka. Chased by an Oriokpa masquerade, she desperately ran into a moving truck, resulting in instant death. The gruesome scene sent shockwaves through the community.

Second Incident: University Student Loses Life

In another tragic incident at Nru Junction, a young male student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), lost his life. Details surrounding his death remain unclear, but sources suggest he may have been attempting to evade the masquerades when caught in the chaos.

Government Response: Investigation and Action

Enugu State Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Okey Ogbodo, confirmed the incidents and announced a full-scale investigation into the Oriokpa Masquerade groups’ activities. Governor Peter Mbah has directed the Commissioner of Police to investigate and bring perpetrators to justice.

The areas impacted by the masqueraders’ actions include Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo, which have witnessed pandemonium, bodily harm, and fatalities.

 Government Warning

The Enugu State Government has issued a stern warning, emphasizing its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and security. Traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities have been summoned to meet with the Commissioner.

“The government will not tolerate further excesses from any group or individual… Our people should never be made to live in fear.” – Enugu State Government statement.

The government has also commiserated with the families of the victims, vowing to ensure justice is served.
