Farmer-Herder Tensions Escalate in Adamawa, Resulting in 3 Fatalities and 8 Injuries
In the Kodomun Community of Demsa Local Government Area, Adamawa State, a resurgence of violence between farmers and herders has claimed three lives and left eight people critically injured. According to SP Suleiman Nguroje, Police Public Relations Officer, a joint security task force has been deployed to quell the unrest and restore order in the affected area. However, no arrests have been made so far.
This recurring conflict has resulted in numerous fatalities and extensive property damage, with losses estimated in millions of naira. The latest outbreak of violence was allegedly sparked by the killing of a young man in Kodomun by suspected herders, leading to heightened tensions in nearby communities.
In response to the escalating crisis, an emergency meeting was convened by His Royal Majesty Homun Alhamdu Gladstone Teneke, the Hama Batta, and Akham Jalo, Executive Chairman of Demsa Local Government Council. The meeting brought together stakeholders to seek a lasting solution to the conflict. Chairman Jalo criticized both parties for withholding information about the conflict’s root causes and warned that those responsible would face consequences.
The meeting resolved to enforce the state government’s directive for herders to relocate their cattle during the cropping and rainy seasons. Additionally, leaders of both groups were instructed to identify and report perpetrators for prosecution. The chairman and traditional ruler emphasized the importance of forgiveness, unity, and peace, while also expressing concerns about the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis.
The meeting was attended by various administrators, directors, and heads of security agencies, all of whom pledged to collaborate on finding a durable solution to the conflict.
