Federal Executive Council Greenlights 14 Road and Bridge Projects in Flood-Hit States.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the construction of 14 roads and bridges in states severely impacted by recent floods, including Ekiti, Adamawa, Kebbi, and Enugu, Minister of Works David Umahi announced during a press briefing following the FEC meeting.
Approved Projects
– Construction of roads in Cross River, Ondo, Osun, Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo states
– Repair and rehabilitation of Gamboru Bridge along Gambor-Ngala/Kala-Balge Road in Borno State
– Rehabilitation of Maraban-Kankara/Funtua Road in Katsina State
– Construction of a 258-kilometer three-lane carriageway, part of the 1000-kilometer Sokoto/Badagry Super-highway, Section 2, Phase 2A
– Dualisation of Afikpo-Uturu-Okigwe Road spanning Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo states (Section 2)
– Construction of Bodo-Bonny Road in Rivers State, executed by Julius Berger, with an additional N80 billion allocated, bringing the total cost to N280 billion
Third Mainland Bridge Revamp
Umahi highlighted the dire condition of the Third Mainland Bridge upon the current government’s assumption of office, citing a pavement differential of over one foot that caused accidents and congestion. The issue was addressed with solar lights, CCTV cameras, and relief stations.
Julius Berger Project
The FEC approved Julius Berger’s project with a total contract sum of N740 billion, divided into three sections. Two sections will be completed through tax credits, while Julius Berger will handle one. The project’s initial cost was N155 billion, increased to N797 billion by the previous administration, and later revised to N1.5 trillion by Julius Berger.
Additional Approvals
The FEC also approved:
– Construction of a service lane on the Lekki Deep Seaport road
– Concessioning of Federal Government land for a parking facility for over 3,000 fuel trucks waiting to load fuel at the Dangote Refinery, to alleviate structural issues on the Lekki-Calabar coastal highway.
