FG Cuts Allowances For Foreign Scholars In Russia, Morocco, Algeria

In a shocking move, the Nigerian government has announced a drastic cut in allowances for foreign scholars stranded in Russia, Morocco, and Algeria, leaving them in a state of financial limbo. The decision comes after months of unpaid allowances, leaving the scholars in a precarious situation. A memo signed by Ndajiwo H.A., Director of the Federal Scholarship Board, revealed the harsh new reality: a significant reduction in supplementation allowances for the 2024 academic year, citing budgetary constraints.

Ronald Donald, a leader of the scholars’ association in Russia, expressed frustration and disappointment. “We’ve been waiting for months, and now they’ve slashed our allowances. The payment mandate was sent to the embassies two weeks ago, but it only covers the reduced amount of $220.” He added, “The Attaché of the Russian embassy confirmed receiving the mandate, but we’re still waiting for the Central Bank of Nigeria to release the funds.”

Another scholar, speaking anonymously, shared a glimmer of hope. “Yes, the FSB has sent the payment mandate, so it’s up to the CBN to act. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, but the uncertainty is unbearable.” The scholars’ plight has sparked concerns about the government’s commitment to supporting its brightest minds abroad.
