FG Pays Off NiMet Staff’s 45-month minimum Wage Arrears

The Nigerian Federal Government has finally settled the long-standing minimum wage arrears owed to Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) staff, dating back to 2019. This payment resolves a contentious issue that had created tension between NiMet management, staff, and labor unions.

In May 2024, the unions had planned to embark on industrial action over the unpaid arrears, but the strike was averted due to the timely intervention of the House Committee on Aviation Technology and the Senate Committee on Aviation. A special session, led by Chairman Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade, facilitated an agreement between NiMet management and union representatives on May 19, 2024.

Professor Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for authorizing the payment. The NiMet Unions Joint Action Committee (NJAC) also thanked President Tinubu, Minister Festus Keyamo, and the relevant House and Senate committees for their role in resolving the issue.
