Kaduna Court Sentences Two to Prison for Internet Fraud
Kaduna Court Slams Internet Fraudsters with Prison Sentences.
In a bid to curb the rising tide of internet fraud, Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court has sentenced two individuals, Nathaniel David Akogun and Samuel Oduma, to prison for impersonation and intention to defraud.
The duo was prosecuted by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate one-count charges bordering on internet fraud.
According to the charges, Oduma impersonated a celebrity, Loius Tomlinson, on Instagram, while Akogun posed as a foreigner interested in online dating on Facebook, using the alias T.D Jakes Official.
Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, prompting the prosecution counsel, M.U Gadaka, to urge the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.
Justice Khobo subsequently sentenced Oduma to three years imprisonment or a fine of N400,000, and ordered the forfeiture of his iPhone 11 Pro to the federal government. Akogun was sentenced to one year imprisonment or a fine of N350,000, and ordered to forfeit his iPhone 7 Plus and Huawei P30 Lite to the government.
The convictions and sentences serve as a warning to others engaged in internet fraud, as the EFCC continues to crack down on cybercrime in Nigeria.
