Lagdo Dam Release: FG Urges Nigerians to Move to Safety

Lagdo Dam Release Sparks Flood Fears in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has sounded the alarm, warning Nigerians living in flood-prone areas to relocate immediately as water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam has been released into River Niger and River Benue. This development comes after NIHSA met with Cameroonian authorities to agree on an intermittent release of water to mitigate potential flooding in 11 states at risk.

 Flood-Prone States on High Alert:

– Adamawa
– Taraba
– Benue
– Nasarawa
– Kogi
– Edo
– Delta
– Anambra

NIHSA Director General, Umar Mohammed, emphasized that all Nigerians have a crucial role to play in preventing flooding. “Everybody has their part to play… individuals should move from the floodplain, clean and clear drainages, and ensure waterways are free-flowing,” Mohammed urged.

The Federal Government had issued a flood alert on Tuesday, warning of potential flooding due to the Lagdo Dam release. This comes on the heels of the devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State, where overflowing waters from the Alau Dam claimed over 30 lives and destroyed thousands of home.
