Lagos Police Nab Six for Public Indecency on Rail Track

Vandalism and Public Indecency Plague Lagos Railways.

A recent surge in vandalism and public indecency has raised concerns about the safety and cleanliness of Lagos’ railway system. In August, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) reported that most of its assets inside the Apapa Port had been vandalized by unknown individuals.

In a separate incident, six people were arrested on Saturday for openly urinating on the rail track in front of the Nigeria Army Shopping Complex, Arena, Oshodi. The Lagos State government made the arrests as part of its #ZeroToleranceLagos and #CleanerLagos initiatives, aimed at enforcing a cleaner and more sanitary environment.

According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, the arrests were made to address the growing problem of public indecency on the state’s rail tracks.

However, vandalism remains a significant challenge for the NRC. During a stakeholders’ summit organized by the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) and the NRC, Director of Operations and Commercial Services Akinwunmi Oshilowo revealed that NRC locomotives face difficulties accessing the ports due to congestion and vandalism.

Oshilowo emphasized the need for improved security and infrastructure at the Apapa Port, citing the lack of sufficient Marshaling Yards and the challenges of bringing train locomotives into the APM Terminals in Apapa.

The incidents highlight the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between the government and the public to ensure the safety and cleanliness of Lagos’ railway system.
