Lagos State Government to Ban Single-Use Plastics and Sachet Water Starting January 2025

Lagos State Government Cracks Down on Single-Use Plastics, Sets January 2025 Deadline.

In a bold move to combat environmental degradation, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to ban single-use plastics, including PET bottles and sachet water, starting January 2025. This decision follows the state’s earlier ban on styrofoam use in government establishments and the metropolis in January 2024.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the ban aims to promote sustainable waste management practices and a healthier environment. Lagos generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste monthly, with plastics accounting for over 60%. Wahab emphasized that effective plastic waste management is crucial to achieving the state’s development priorities and reducing socio-economic consequences.

Key Highlights of the Ban:

– Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) Targeted: PET bottles, sachet water, and similar items
– Implementation Date: January 2025
– Legal Framework: Enabling law to ensure effective enforcement
– Benefits: Creating value from waste, formalizing waste-picking sector, reducing pressure on landfills, and improving drainage systems

The Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP) has expressed support for the ban but urged the government to implement it in phases, allowing businesses time to adjust. With over 2,000 members employing 10,000 workers in Lagos, ATWAP Chairperson Mosaku Ololade emphasized the need for a smooth transition.

As Lagos takes the lead in environmental sustainability, stakeholders are encouraged to cooperate with the government to ensure a successful implementation of the ban.
