NDLEA Makes Drug Tests Mandatory for Fresh University Students
NDLEA Proposes Mandatory Drug Tests for University Freshers to Curb Abuse.
In a bid to combat the growing scourge of drug abuse among Nigerian youths, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced plans to introduce compulsory drug tests for newly admitted university students.
NDLEA Commandant in Kwara State, Fatima Abiola-Popoola, revealed this during a recent radio interview in Ilorin, stressing that the move aims to prevent drug abuse and provide early intervention for those already using drugs.
Abiola-Popoola expressed alarm over the rising number of drug users in Nigeria, particularly among females, citing a 2018 survey that showed 14.3 million people were using drugs, with one in four users being women.
“This trend poses a serious risk to families and society, as women are the administrators of the home,” she warned.
The proposed drug tests are seen as a proactive measure to address the growing drug menace and provide support for those struggling with addiction.
