Nigerians Mark 64th Independence with Nationwide Protests Against Bad Governance.
Today, October 1, 2024, Nigerians are celebrating their 64th Independence Day, but not everyone is in a celebratory mood. A group of protesters, led by former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, have taken to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the current state of the nation. The protests, tagged #FearlessOctober1, are happening simultaneously across the country, with a large gathering at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos.
Protest Demands
The protesters are calling for immediate action to address several critical issues, including:
– Reversal of electricity tariff increase
– End to attacks on democratic rights
– Reduction of petrol price to N197 per litre
– Elimination of petrol scarcity
– Addressing hunger and insecurity
– Electoral reforms
– Human capital development
Organizers and Security
The protest is being spearheaded by various civil society groups, including the Take It Back Movement, Education Rights Campaign, Coalition for Revolution, and Socialist Workers League. A large contingent of security personnel, including policemen, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, are monitoring the situation to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Continuation of #EndBadGovernance Protest
According to the organizers, this protest is a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance protest that took place from August 1 to 10. The Federal Government’s failure to address their demands has led to this latest demonstration.
The protesters are determined to make their voices heard, and the security personnel are working to ensure their safety. As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: Nigerians are demanding change and better governance.
