DEADLY ASSAULT ON NIGERIEN NATIONAL GUARD CAMP LEAVES TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION.
Tillabéri, Niger – A devastating attack on a Nigerien National Guard camp in Bouloundjounga, Tillabéri region, has resulted in the deaths of seven Security and Defense Forces (FDS) personnel, with ten others still unaccounted for.
The surprise assault, launched by dozens of Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) fighters, occurred early yesterday morning, catching the Nigerien National Guard unit off guard. The camp, located near the Samira Hill gold mine and the Burkina Faso border, was overrun, with the assailants making off with a significant quantity of weapons and ammunition.
The attack, which began around 6 a.m. on August 26th, highlights the growing security concerns in the region. Only two vehicles belonging to the Nigerien Armed Forces (FAN) managed to escape the carnage.
The Nigerien National Guard unit, comprising 80 FDS members, was responsible for securing the Samira Hill gold mine, the country’s only operational commercial mine. The loss of life, personnel, and equipment has raised alarm bells about the ability of the security forces to protect critical infrastructure and personnel in the region.
