NMDPRA Bans Fuel Sales in Jerrycans at Filling Stations
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has introduced a fresh directive, instructing fuel stations across the nation to cease selling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, in jerrycans. This move is part of a broader strategy to address the prevailing petrol shortage, which has led to extended queues at the dwindling number of fuel stations still operational in major cities.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, NMDPRA officials were seen advising a fuel station’s management to immediately discontinue the practice of selling fuel in jerrycans, citing the potential risks associated with it. During the on-site inspection, an NMDPRA official was captured on video sternly warning that failure to comply would result in the revocation of the station’s retail license.
The official emphasized, “You must take this seriously – no further sales in jerrycans, or we will revoke your license.” This latest directive has sparked widespread criticism, particularly among Nigerians who rely on petrol-powered generators due to the country’s erratic electricity supply. Many have expressed concerns that this move will disproportionately affect the most vulnerable populations.
