No Idea When FG Will Begin Payment Of N77,000 Increased Allowance To Corps Members —NYSC

Nigerian Government Leaves Corps Members in Limbo Over N77,000 Allowance Implementation.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that it cannot provide a timeline for the implementation of the newly approved N77,000 allowance for corps members. This development comes after the agency’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, revealed in September that the monthly allowance had been increased from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024, in accordance with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

However, corps members were unexpectedly paid their old allowance of N33,000 for September, sparking confusion and disappointment. A corps member shared, “They have not paid, but the people around me who were paid got 33k (N33,000) instead of the N77,000 promised.”

Caroline Embu attributed the delay to the government’s processing time, stating, “It is a process… After making the pronouncement, the government has to work on it to be able to pay. It is not as if it is automatic.” Embu also emphasized that the payment is handled by the Federal Government, not NYSC, and therefore, they cannot provide a specific implementation date.
