Police Accused of Harassing, Extorting NYSC Members in Surulere [VIDEO]

Police Extortion Scandal Rocks Surulere, Lagos.

A shocking video has surfaced online, showing police officers allegedly extorting N1 million from three National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Surulere, Lagos. The footage, shared by X user Oluyemi Fasipe, reveals a heated encounter between the corps members and police officers, who initially stopped them for not having a physical copy of their driver’s license.

According to Fasipe’s caption, the corps members were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House Area C Police Command, where they were robbed of N1 million. The police officer in the video can be seen preventing the corps members from filming the incident and refusing to let them call their loved ones, insisting they keep their phones hidden.

This disturbing incident has sparked outrage online, with many condemning the police officers’ actions as “evil” and calling for accountability. The absence of a physical driver’s license, which can be digitally verified, is hardly an offense worthy of such harsh treatment, let alone extortion.

Alleged Police Misconduct

This incident is not an isolated case, as there have been previous reports of police extortion and harassment in Lagos. In one instance, soldiers were seen beating a police officer for extorting motorists in Aba.

Calls for Action

The Lagos State Police Command must take immediate action to address these allegations and ensure justice is served. The Nigerian Police Force must also take concrete steps to curb the endemic corruption and extortion within its ranks.

As one online commenter noted, “Adejobi Muyiwa, the force PRO, will soon release a statement, in most cases, a very insensitive one”. It’s time for more than just statements; tangible action is needed to reform the police force and protect Nigerian citizens from abuse of power.
