Police Arrest Quartet Over Sextortion, Online Romance Scam
Four in Police Net for Sextortion, Romance Scam.
The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) has made a significant breakthrough in combating online scams by arresting four suspects involved in a sextortion and romance scam case. The suspects, identified as Abodunrin Rasheed, Abodunrin Tunde, and Abodunrin Rokeeb, were apprehended after a report was filed through the NPF-NCCC E-Reporting portal and an intelligence report from the Center.
According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, the suspects met a Croatian national on a dating app, pretending to be a woman, and eventually convinced him to send nude pictures. They then pressured him to pay a ransom, threatening to share the pictures with his family and friends.
The NPF-NCCC conducted a thorough investigation, recovering six iPhones, one Techno phone, one Samsung phone, and a Lexus car. Further investigations revealed the suspects’ involvement in multiple cybercriminal activities, defrauding and extorting numerous victims globally, with proceeds received through gift cards.
Suspects’ Charges and Warning
The suspects will face charges upon completion of investigations ¹ ². The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, urges Nigerians to be cautious of suspicious online activities and warns cybercriminals that the Nigeria Police Force will not tolerate any compromise on national peace and security.
