A devastating boat mishap occurred on the River Niger upstream Jebba dam in Gabjibo community, Mokwa Local Government Area, Niger State, leaving many lives hanging in the balance. The Niger state Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that 150 out of approximately 300 passengers have been rescued.

Rescue Efforts So Far

The rescue operation is a collaborative effort between NSEMA, the state Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers. According to Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director-General of NSEMA, the prompt response from community volunteers has been instrumental in saving lives.

The Incident

The boat, carrying mostly women and children, was traveling from Mundi community to Gbajibo for Maulid celebrations when it capsized around 8:30 pm on October 1. The cause of the mishap is still unknown.
