Terrorism Ravages Benue, CDS Musa Hosts Opulent Dinner in Abuja

Bloodshed in Benue: Terrorists Unleash Carnage as Nigeria’s Defence Chief Hosts Lavish Dinner

As the sun set on Thursday evening, the peaceful village of Ayati in Benue State was transformed into a scene of utter carnage. Gunmen, fueled by a deadly mix of greed and vengeance, descended upon the unsuspecting residents, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. Over 60 innocent lives were brutally cut short, their families forever shattered by the senseless violence.

Meanwhile, in the nation’s capital, Abuja, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, was hosting a lavish dinner party for his colleagues from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The occasion was a meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff, and the who’s who of West Africa’s military elite had gathered to “unwind and relax” at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess.

The stark contrast between the two events couldn’t be more jarring. While the people of Benue mourned the loss of their loved ones, the Nigerian military’s top brass indulged in fine dining and warm camaraderie. The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, was also in attendance, praising the ECOWAS Committee for its efforts in promoting regional security and cooperation.

But what security? What cooperation? The people of Benue know the truth – that their lives are cheap, and their safety is of little concern to those in power. The attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen have claimed over 5,000 lives, leaving countless families shattered and communities destroyed.

As the ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff sipped their wine and savored their meals, the blood of the innocent still wet the soil of Ayati village. The disconnect between the elite and the people has never been more glaring. It’s time for those in power to wake up to the reality of Nigeria’s security crisis and take action to protect its citizens.”

The lavish dinner party in Abuja was a stark reminder of the disconnect between the country’s elite and the everyday Nigerians who bear the brunt of the country’s security challenges. While the Defence Chief and his guests enjoyed their evening, the people of Benue were left to pick up the pieces and mourn their dead.

The ECOWAS Committee’s meeting was supposed to be about promoting regional security and cooperation, but it seemed like just another opportunity for the elite to pat themselves on the back and pretend like everything is fine.

Well, everything is not fine. Nigeria is burning, and its people are dying. The time for empty words and lavish dinner parties is over. It’s time for action.

The Nigerian government needs to take concrete steps to address the security challenges facing the country. This includes holding perpetrators of violence accountable, providing adequate support to victims and their families, and addressing the root causes of the conflicts.

Until then, the people of Nigeria will continue to suffer, and the elite will continue to enjoy their privileges, oblivious to the suffering of others.

The contrast between the two events on Thursday evening could not be more stark. One was a celebration of life and privilege, the other a brutal reminder of death and suffering. It’s time for Nigeria’s leaders to choose which side they are on.”
