Tragic Incident: Lion Attacks, Kills Zoo Staff at Obasanjo's Zoo

Tragedy Strikes Obasanjo’s Zoo: Lion Kills Experienced Handler.

In a devastating incident, a lion attacked and killed its handler, Babaji Daule, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday morning. The zoo, a notable part of the former Nigerian President’s legacy, witnessed the tragic event when Daule, a trained handler, failed to secure the lion’s enclosure before feeding it. This lapse allowed the lion to escape and launch a fatal attack on Daule, causing severe neck injuries that ultimately led to his death.

Incident Timeline:

Saturday morning: The incident occurred while Daule was feeding the lion.
7:40 a.m.: The Chief Security Officer of OOPL reported the incident.
Aftermath: Security forces shot the lion to release its grip on Daule, and his body was transported to the mortuary at Ijaye General Hospital.

Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the tragic event. This incident raises concerns about zoo safety protocols and the measures in place to protect handlers and visitors.

A similar incident occurred at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) zoo, where a zookeeper lost his life saving a colleague from a lion attack. These tragic events highlight the importance of adhering to safety procedures and protocols when interacting with wild animals.
